LA5EKA/MM - Maritime mobile operations
North Sea - November 2007

To the left is our research vessel H.U Sverdrup II, 55 meters long and mostly used for oceanographic surveys. The image in the middle is my "shack" onboard with Elecraft KX1 (4 band), IC7000 and MFJ 16010 random wire tuner The image to the right a peek out the aft hatch on a stormy day. The antenna used for this cruise was an 26.5 m long inverted L going from the aft deck, up 10 meters and forward approximately 16.5 meters. Neither the Elecraft T1 or KX1 internal tuner could tune the antenna on 80 meters, so I had to use the old trusty MFJ-16010 (which can tune a wet noodle on any band from DC to daylight it seems). Worked 65 DXCC on 80 meters with this setup.

Update Sept. 2008 Now using a shortened dipole for 80 and 40 meters. Seems to work very well, and has served med good out here in the Barents Sea. The conds are'nt often so good in the Barents Sea, and I work mainly CW. I am available for skeds on SSB however, just drop me an email.
