Portable operations
LA5EKA/P
These pictures are from the first week of August 2005, when I hiked alone across the Tafjord Mountains in the vicinity of Tafjord, 70 km's east of Aalesund. I carried 35 kilos in my bergen, and the distance walked was about 70 km's. The equipment I brought was a Elecraft KX1, a 5 metre long "fishing rod" thing, an iSun solar panel with the BattPak from
ICPSolar, 13m of wire + radials (10, 5 and 2 meters long), and a few odds and ends. I actually didn't need the solar charger and batterypack, since the six AA's in the KX1 lasted for 5 days, and I had brought a spare set. Total weight of the radio equipment was approximately 2 kilos. I spent six nights in in the mountains, on 5 different campgrounds. My tent was a
Jerven Multimate with tent addons, and my cooking stove/burner was a Trangia Multifuel (Nova). The conds were so so, but I worked more than 30 stations. I was on for about one to two hours every night. The cabin you see on the top middle picture is a war museum, the Fieldfare Cabin, used by Norwegian saboteurs from Linge Company during World War 2.The radiostation they used is still there, together with a copy of their logbook. The receiver was a "Sweetheart".

Da jeg kjørte VK2 på 40m
Here are pictures from another hiking trip I went on this summer (2005), to Dyrdalen in the vicinity of Geiranger. I actually worked VK2 - Australia with 2 watts on 40m from here, during greyline peak. Astonishing DX, considering the valley I was in. It was like a huge bowl with one opening only, in the direction of VK2 ! The tent here is a Fjellsport Vassfaret, the rest of the equipment is the same as above.
Here are a few pictures from some other portable operations during the Summer of 2005. The two on the left are from the same spot. I threw 10 m. of wire up into a tree during my lunch break while hiking by a lake. Worked three stations while cooking my lunch. DL7KB, OK2BEI/QRP and DK1KQ/QRP. The picture to the far right is from another trip, further inn by the same lake. Here I worked SM5BRG/QRP, we had a nice qso while lunch was cooking. It took me about 3 minutes to set up station in both cases.
